The Deer Park

Red Deer at Tupgill Park - The largest British land mammal.

In early 2007 we populated a red Deer Herd of around twenty Hinds and one Stag, these seem to have settled in extremely well, and between may and July this year calves were born.

Deer Calves

Please don't touch!

It is vital people do not pick up, move or even touch the baby calves as any human scent which remains on the young Deer may deter the mother from returning to feed her young. Red Deer change their behaviour through the seasons, as the male (Stag) and the female (Hind) separate during the summer months and rejoin in the autumn, for the mating season or rut.

They also change as they grow, losing their spots after just six weeks. The Males grow their antlers in the first spring which grow larger each year until their fourth year when they become an eight pointer! Four points on each antler.
